Learning Objectives:

Hyperlipidemia

• Describe how primary care physicians are performing in management of hyperlipidemia;
• Rapidly assess risk stratification for coronary heart disease and its implications for lipid management;
• Apply the NCEP guidelines in practice while understanding their limitations;
• Help patients develop a “therapeutic lifestyle change”;
• Provide evidence-based interventions to optimize lipid levels using diet and drugs;
• Implement systems to enhance effectiveness of managing patients with hyperlipidemia in practice; and
• Gain appreciation of the support AAFP and its publications provide in the area of hyperlipidemia.

Immunization Update: Adolescents & Adults

• Rank various barriers among adults and adolescents in need of immunization;
• Apply the 2008-09 CDC Adult and Adolescent Immunization Schedules to appropriate patient populations;
• Compare the efficacy of current and former vaccines for H. zoster, B. pertussis, and Human Papilloma Virus;
• Operate the “Catch-Up” schedule methodology for all adolescent patients that did not receive the necessary immunizations at the acceptable age.

Pain Management

• Recognize responsibilities prior to prescribing medications to manage pain
• Apply the proper titration schedule for each individual patient based on symptom management and side effects
• Identify follow-up plans for patients that have been prescribed medications shown to have an increased risk for misuse, abuse, and diversion
• Determine which medications are most effective for managing specific etiologies of pain

Musculoskeletal Concerns in the Pediatric Patient

• Classify growth plate fractures via the Salter-Harris Classification System
• Formulate treatment plans for pediatric musculoskeletal issues that are injury-specific
• Formulate musculoskeletal injury prevention plans for children that are injury-specific
• Integrate the parent(s) and child perspective into the injury prevention plan in order to increase the likelihood of compliance

Fibromyalgia

• Recognize the populations with the highest incidence and prevalence of fibromyalgia
• Identify the 18 specified sites identified by the American College of Rheumatology as a criteria for the classification for fibromyalgia
• Distinguish the symptoms of fibromyalgia from myofascial pain syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, and hypothyroidism
• Formulate treatment plans using both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies
• Measure therapeutic efficacy using the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ)
